Novels to Read for Inspiration in Teenagers

Help me give my students a selection of novels to read identifying with the theme when the future is not what you expected such as: Station Eleven, The Maze Runner, The Selection, Delirium and several others.

My Students

Our school has an enrollment of 1500+ students of which 34% are economically disadvantaged. We have a balance of 52% males and 48% females, with our minority population at 52%. We have 75% of our students on free or reduced lunch.

Our school is in a suburban area, built-in 1970 with a strong school spirit and ties to the community.

Our school has an unusual percentage of teachers who graduated from here and returned later to teach. I jokingly warn the new ninth graders about drinking the water! Our school community is a close-knit group that looks out for each other. Thank you for considering my project for funding to help us.

My Project

Thank you for considering a donation to my project to supply my students with current novels that help them to identify with challenging events going on in their life. I purchased a poster from Teacher's Discovery that is titled "How I Survived the Apocalypse" and several books on my project are reviewed on this poster. I might tape over "Apocalypse" and put "Pandemic" :)

These novels are for my students to read where the future is not what you expected.

This selection of novels will help them identify with the challenges that other characters face and the grit they summon up to rise to the occasion. I will frame the Poster and put out this selection of books for them to peruse and read in the classroom, as well as offered for drive-by pick-up for students who have remained virtual this year. Some of the novels on the poster are "The Maze Runner" by James Dashner, " The Giver" by Lois Lowry, "The Selection" by Kiera Cass, "Never Let Me Go" by Kazuo Ishiguro, "Delirium" by Lauren Oliver and several others. Thank you for helping me encourage reading in my high school classroom.
