Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The student population of my school is 86% Hispanic/Latino and 87% Socioeconomically Disadvantaged. My class is a reflection of this population. I am aware that many of my students do not have books in their homes. School offers them the outlet to read great literature. I have witnessed their excitement when they read. Reading opens their imaginations and lets them learn new things.

My objective is to get great literature into my students hands so they can read, read, read!

My district has provided us with a good Language Arts (ELA) curriculum. The ELA curriculum provides a list of recommended literature (novels) to support unit themes and stories in student anthologies. Class sets of these novels are not provided. I am posting this project so I can get class sets of these novels. I know that having these novels will provide support for the curriculum, but will also provide an extension of further learning for my students.

My Project

The novels of Esperanza Rising and The Phantom Tollbooth will support themes and stories in the existing English Language Arts curriculum for the 5th grade. The novels will be used for enrichment, meaning additional reading to enhance learning. Each student will have a copy of the novel to read along with whole group, or for personal reading. Along with the novels I have asked for teacher guides. The teacher guides provide lessons for further exploration of the novel, but also to help with learning vocabulary, comprehension skills and strategies. Also, a writing component is provided for students to reflect and share ideas. These teacher guides are e-books and provide a technology component as an option for student assignments.
