My students are a diverse group of learners in New York City. They come from a variety of cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
My students are passionate about learning Spanish and understand the benefits of learning a second language.
Last year, they helped fight for the creation of a new Spanish 4 Class. Previously, my school only offered Spanish 1, 2, and 3. Some students finished Spanish 3 as sophomores and had no option of continuing their language studies. For the first time ever, we have a Spanish 4 Class! Unfortunately, there is no money in our budget for the books we need.
My Project
In order for students to build confidence in their literacy skills, expand their vocabulary and gain cultural understanding, they will read novels. The novels that I am requesting will be the basis of each unit of study.
Rather than memorizing lists of vocabulary out of context, these novels will give the students an opportunity to learn Spanish in an authentic and interesting way!
They will acquire new vocabulary and learn more complex grammatical structures by reading and discussing culturally relevant topics from these books.
Learning a new language is challenging, but it can be interesting and fun. These themes in these novels will be built upon through the use of other authentic texts and movies.
