Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach literacy to 130 amazing 6th grade students! They come from very diverse backgrounds. We are a Title I school located in a low socioeconomic area. My students are so eager to learn. They come to school every day and want to be successful. They are like sponges, ready to soak up knowledge. If they had literature readily available, they would take full advantage, and it would enrich their lives. They are great kids who deserve a bright future.
My Project
These novels will contribute to a literary unit on "Courageous Characters". It is about a lost boy in Sudan during wartime that comes to America as a refugee. He creates a nonprofit organization, called Water for Sudan, to help his village back in Africa.
A Long Walk to Water is an inspiring novel that will hopefully ignite motivation in my students, many of which are English language learners.
My students come from very diverse backgrounds and I believe they will be able to connect well to the protagonist in this book. Literature that connects and inspires is vital to teaching our Title 1 students.
