Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach ESL classes (grades 9-12) at a high school in a rural, low income school district. Our school has a high immigrant population with the majority of these immigrants coming from Spanish-speaking countries.

There is a group of immigrant students at my high school who are on the cusp of entering regular mainstream English classes. Their English language levels are above ESL classes but just under regular high school English courses. Many of these students are quite capable of reading a novel but are nervous and/or put off by the length and vocabulary of high school level novels.

These students are right on the edge of becoming fluent! I am looking for help in building a small classroom library of high-interest but low-level novels. Most of these books are modern, young adult novels at appropriate English levels for this unique group of students.

Your donation will not only build my students' English vocabulary and further their English language skills, but also give a priceless gift: the sense of achievement and success. For many of these students, this will be the first novel they read in English. You hold the power to make it happen
