My Students
World history is too often seen as "one darn thing after another" from a stale old textbook. Yet lovers of history know that this is the furthest thing from the truth. I want to help my freshmen students see the beautiful mosaic of stories that comprise world history.
My kids are awesome and I love them.
We live in a small town, and yet my students are future world-shapers. I believe they can be the kinds of teens who grow up into parents, spouses, thinkers, and creators who impacted others. Yet, for many of them, this small town is all they've ever known -- and there's both a beauty to that reality, and a limitation to it.
My Project
My students need a selection of 8 books such as The First Salute, The Zimmerman Telegram, and Thunderstruck, that share robust historical research through excellent, narrative writing. When our classroom receives copies of these books books, my students will explore the texts in groups, specifically looking for connections between the material we've covered in class and the historical epochs described in their assigned book. This task will help students make connections between what they've already learned and what they might like to learn, thus whetting their appetites to this particular genre of reading (research-driven, narrative history).
That's what you're providing with this project -- a chance to dig deeper into history; a chance to do what few history students get to do in this country: explore deeply and richly the many stories that the textbooks cannot contain.
If you've fallen in love with history, help my students do the same. Thank you so much!
