Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

What I love most about my students is their curiosity, resilience, and growing sense of justice. They are thoughtful, eager to learn, and full of questions about the world around them. Many of them come from diverse backgrounds and bring unique perspectives to our classroom discussions—making literature like They Called Us Enemy all the more powerful and relevant.

This graphic memoir by George Takei is part of our official curriculum, selected to help students explore themes of identity, civil rights, and American history through a firsthand narrative.

However, despite its curricular importance, our district is unable to fund the necessary resources for this unit.

With your support, I hope to provide a classroom set of They Called Us Enemy so that each student can engage with the text fully. These books will not only support literacy and comprehension, but also fuel meaningful conversations about justice, empathy, and the American experience.

Your generosity will make it possible for my students to truly connect with history and literature in a way that is both educational and personally transformative. Thank you for helping us bring this important story to life in our classroom.
