This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Food insecurity is a serious and ongoing issue in Oakland. At ARISE, all students receive free lunch due to family income levels, but that only ensures meals during school hours. Many still struggle to access food at home.

Research shows that meeting basic needs, like food, directly improves student outcomes - that’s why we’re asking for your support to help sustain and grow our school’s Food Pantry Program which serves over 100 student families a week!

ARISE partners with the Alameda County Community Food Bank to run a food distribution open to all students and families. A group of student interns helps run this program—packing and distributing food, maintaining the pantry, volunteering at the food bank, and spreading awareness of other food resources in the Fruitvale community. This year, students in our Public and Community Health Pathway even created an exhibit on food origins and its currently no exhibit at the Lawrence Hall of Science in Berkeley! All this to say, our students understand the impact of food insecurity and are passionate about giving back.

The funding we’re requesting would help make our pantry more welcoming and sustainable. We’d like to launch an annual End-of-Year Food Pantry Volunteer Celebration to recognize volunteers and help them build community with one another while playing games. Certificates of recognition would support their college and job applications, and help attract new volunteers.

Students have also requested reusable bags, as many carry food home on crowded public transit with already full backpacks. These bags would make transport easier and reduce cross-contamination between fresh produce and frozen items.

Our school is small, so a sturdy table for food setup, orange volunteer vests, and a shed for storing pantry supplies would greatly support our weekly operations and build student pride in this work.
