Nourishing Minds for Successful Regents Preparation

Help me give my students energy to prepare for Regents exams. More than 50% of my students are new to the US. They do not have permanent homes or sufficient food. Help them use 100% energy for learning.

My Project

Education is a fundamental right of any child, I believe it is a human right. Education can be the catalyst to a successful future. In the pursuit of academic excellence, many of my students face so many challenges, among them food and housing insecurity. I teach in Brooklyn South which is being populated with many new migrant families from South America and Europe. Unfortunately, many of these students have major academic gaps, therefore, our school must provide them with academic intervention programs so that they have the ability to meet state standards and can pass required Regents exams to graduate on time. School lunch is served at noon and many of these students remain in school until 4:40 pm to receive academic support. By then students are hungry and have trouble focusing on learning. I would like to remove this barrier by providing students with a daily snack (Cheez-It, Pringles, fruit snacks, veggie straws, granola bars, cookies). This will enhance their learning and improve their ability to effectively prepare for Regents examinations.

I believe that this project will be impactful since if we can help students close the gaps in their learning, they are more likely to graduate.

This will decrease the likelihood of crimes, and many social and economic issues which may likely arise in the future. New York City is currently in a challenging situation with the potential for continuing struggles, I believe that we can each help by doing what we can. I prepare engaging, differentiated lessons for my students, however, I cannot afford to feed them. I want my students to be nourished so that they can solely focus on learning. Students engaged in rigorous Regents preparation require sustained energy levels to navigate the demanding study schedules.
