This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In our rural community, many high school students face not only the academic pressures of adolescence but also the daily reality of food insecurity. These students are resilient, resourceful, and deeply deserving of support. Through our Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) therapy sessions, we help students build emotional awareness, strengthen coping skills, and foster mental well-being. However, meaningful emotional growth is difficult to achieve when students are hungry, and their basic needs are not being met. Many students arrive at SEL sessions without having eaten, which makes it harder to focus, reflect, and engage in the process. Providing snacks like animal crackers, helps students stay focused and alert during therapy and in the classroom. It also promotes a sense of safety and care that enhances trust and emotional openness. A nourished body supports a regulated mind, and offering snacks in a welcoming, nonjudgmental space helps reduce the stigma of asking for help. Something as simple as a bag of chips or a cookie can offer dignity, relief, and a tangible sign that someone cares.

Through the Nourish to Flourish project, we aim to stock our SEL therapy spaces with snacks available before or during sessions, normalize nourishment as part of mental health support, and provide consistent access to small yet meaningful resources for students experiencing food scarcity.

We strive to create a safe, inviting space where students can learn to understand and care for themselves, inside and out. They balance school responsibilities with personal struggles and, for many, the weight of generational poverty or family stress. Yet they continue to show up for their education, for themselves, and for each other. Through SEL, they are learning how to manage anxiety, build self-awareness, and foster healthy relationships. With the right support, they are not just surviving—they are learning to flourish.
