Nourish and Flourish

My students need a deep fryer to learn about different types of oils, smoking points, and the caloric density of fried foods.

My Students

The students I have the opportunity to work with are creative, innovative, enthusiastic young people who are known to thank their teachers when they leave classrooms. There are over 1,100 students on campus in grades four through eight. It wasn't always like this, but in the past few years, the school has blossomed as the result of a visionary principal, progressive staff and active parent community. As a result, there is now a lottery and long wait list for new enrollees.

Parents are coming in droves to visit the campus and see all it has to offer including a wide variety of elective classes that you would normally only have access to in high school or college.

For example, students can take Theater, Dance, Speech, Tap, Ensemble, Encore, Keyboards, Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and Art just to name a few. They can also get involved in a Community Action Team elective course, Future Teacher elective course, or be a part of ASB, Media or Yearbook. They can even learn how to use a 3D printer in a class designed to teach that skill. The students are noticeably vibrant and well behaved. Everyone feels fortunate to be there including me.

My Project

These products that I have chosen will help expand the options for food preparation by the students in our new culinary class. For example, when it comes to fried foods, many students have only eaten french fries, onion rings, or hash browns. They have not seen how other fruits and vegetables can be transformed into delicious treats using the deep fryer. The deep fryer enables us to make things like fried tomatoes, fried zucchini, fried lemons, fried apples, or fried brussel sprouts.

To accompany the deep fryer, I have requested an oil container.

The deep fryer provides important lessons about how to recycle and store ingredients and the benefits of reusing strained oil. It also gives me the opportunity to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of various types of oils like olive oil, coconut oil, canola oil, peanut oil, sesame oil, vegetable oil, etc. I want to ensure students understand the concept of smoke point and the difference between refined oils and unrefined oils.

To maintain good health, the consumption of fried foods must be limited. I can use a deep fryer to create examples that show dramatic differences in the caloric density of foods. For example, I can deep fry a funnel cake and a brussel sprout and put them side by side on a plate. We can then analyze how those two treats are different. If you are going to consume fried food, which is the better alternative and why?
