My Project
Our Author-Study Unit asks students to read like writers. We pay attention to HOW a writer creates their characters by noticing the motivations that drive the characters and the barriers that cause conflict in their lives. Students identify the unique techniques an author uses across multiple books, the trademarks of their individual writing style. Finally, students are taught to notice how voice and perspective are used to reach and teach the reader. In order to do this kind of work, students need multiple books by the same author to study. These books also have to be on their individual reading level so they can comprehend these fine details without too much difficulty or frustration. Reading from the perspective of a writer, and dissecting their methods of creation, helps students understand the core elements of a story on deeper levels.
