My students need more opportunities to work with numbers. We can write the numbers outside with chalk, make numbers on our desks with play-doh and play with objects to show different numbers.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten at an elementary school in San Diego, CA. We are a Title I school with low income students, primarily with a Latino population. I have 23 students with 15 boys and 8 girls. Some students have had preschool and some have not. Many students come into Kindergarten not knowing any letters. My job is to get them to recognize and write 26 uppercase and lowercase letters. In addition, they need to learn the sounds for each letter. After that, we begin the task of blending the letters to read and write words. Besides this, each student is expected to recognize and work with numbers up to 30. We are very busy indeed!
My Project
My students are TK and Kinder this year and I am finding they need more opportunities to use different materials to work with numbers and build number sense. I love the idea of building a number out of play doh, which will help build their motor skills and help them learn how to make the number at the same time. Writing numbers outside in chalk will reinforce what we learn in class. Playing games like Hi Ho Cherry-O with others will build their number sense and reinforce sharing. Puzzles will help them work independently as they are self correcting. Being immersed in numbers will encourage familiarity, like using the jumbo magnetic numbers. Students need a variety of experiences with numbers, and these materials will allow them to do that everyday. Math is important!
