This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are excited and energetic typical 11-year-olds, except they are not. My students come from very diverse and economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Many of my students are bilingual; they speak English as a second language.

In our class, we utilize collaboration and peer learning/teaching as tools to build the skills of all of the students.

We are a part of a math department that is proud to implement and focus on collaborative classroom structures to increase engagement and learning. The work we do extends beyond developing math skills into building real-world skills such as teamwork, building relationships, and utilizing resources. In addition, there is a strong focus on building confidence and developing a growth mindset.

My Project

I am passionate about making class fun. My students are constantly telling me class flies by. There is always a lot of math to learn, so I have to get creative with how I keep kids engaged.

These basic classroom supplies will be used to make writing math notes fun.

It's in my 6th grade math class that many of my students really begin to learn organizational note taking skills. I want to teach my students how to use colors, boxes, highlighting and underlining to create passionate note takers.

Students will also be able to relieve anxiety and stress with cute squishies which are classroom essentials in my class. Finally I have added a door lock jam for a quick lock status during lock down drills (and in the event of an emergency).
