Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My first year of teaching, I asked my students to decorate an index card with three facts about themselves. As I read these cards, decorated with different flags, dislikes, likes, and fun facts, they started creating a better picture of the students I was teaching. They were no longer students, they were people.

My students are people, real people, with real problems and successes.

They are transgender, bisexual, male, female, Hispanic, Chinese, adopted, poor, rich, happy and sometimes sad. But more importantly, they are strong. At my school, they are not afraid of their labels. In fact, they leave the labels behind, they leave the problems behind, and share a piece of themselves with the school community. In doing so, they make my school a better, welcoming, and safe learning environment.

It was silly of me to ask my students for just three facts. They are more than data points, more than an index card and more than students. My students are human beings transforming into powerful and influential leaders.

My Project

Imagine a classroom where the teacher is not confined to the front of the classroom during the lecture. Imagine a classroom where the teacher writes notes as she is walking around and when it comes to a “Your Turn”, a student can write out his/her answer from his desk, as it projects for the entire class to see. Imagine a classroom where each set of digital notes is organized and made available for anyone absent or anyone that needs a slower pace, or anyone that wants to change the format of the notes to better suite their needs. This is the classroom that I have envisioned for my students.

I want a classroom where I can be part of their world and they come into mine: where we share ideas, copy ideas, and view those ideas from anywhere in the world.

All it takes to make this vision come true is a touchscreen device that will allow me to teach while I am on the other side of the desk and allows my students to be part of the process by contributing to the notes taken and then shared with the class.

Additionally, if I am among them, I will truly be able to see their perspective: I will see when they understand the concepts or see at what step they are struggling, while they are struggling. Being among the sea of students, will also keep them focused because now they are held accountable for being part of the notes and contributing to our classroom community. Finally, when they leave that day's class, they leave with the certainty that what they just learned and experienced will be waiting for them at home or on the road, available for them to review or revise, and hopefully teach to others.
