My Students
Each day when my students walk in to our Algebra classroom, they make a choice to learn. There is a quote from Abigail Adams that I share with my students: "Learning is not attained by chance; it must be sought for with ardor and attended to with diligence." My students are special because they exemplify this tenet of education.
My students come from very diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, but they unite to become expert problem solvers in my Math classroom.
As a Houston ISD Advanced Algebra 1 teacher this year, I relish the challenge of pushing my students very hard to overcome doubt and reach their full academic potential. I want them to be ready for AP Calculus! We remind ourselves each day that excellence is not an act, but a habit. By attending to the details, we will succeed in meeting our big, bold academic goals.
Last, but certainly not least, my students are fun. Their sense of humor keeps each day exciting and interesting. During the lunch tutorials that I host, students regularly come visit to discuss all sorts of interesting topics far beyond Math. I look forward to coming to school because of my students.
My Project
My HADV Algebra 1 students build interactive notebooks each semester to house their resources and work. I was very impressed with the quality of what they built in the fall. Unfortunately, several of the notebooks that the students had purchased did not withstand the high level of usage very well. In particular, many covers started to tear. Having reliable notebooks that can handle our rigorous demands is vital to the effective operation of my classroom.
My kids need durable notebooks that will last through our many new learning aims and rigorous STAAR review period this spring.
I would like to acknowledge all of their great work with their notebooks from last semester by providing each of them with a new high-quality notebook to start the spring semester. The new poly covers will last much longer than the old cardboard ones from last semester. The Algebra 1 STAAR Exam is coming up in May, and my students are all striving to score commended on that important standardized exam. Their ability to complete their STAAR review work in a separate part of their notebook will be very useful. Funding in my school district is tight right now, and there is not much available for items like a whole classroom set of notebooks.
These new notebooks will be a pivotal part of my students' success in my classroom this spring. I want to be able to reward my students' hard work from last semester with a gift that will help push them even harder next semester. Not only will my students benefit this spring as they prepare for the Algebra 1 STAAR Exam, but they will have long-lasting notebooks that they can still reference in their future high school Math classes!
