My students need the basics: pencils, highlighters, index cards, read clip-boards, post-it notes, etc. We also need classroom tools like a media cart, reading rug, & more
“Every child deserves a champion—an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection, and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be.” ~ Rita Pierson.
My kids need basic learning supplies in order to thrive - I am here to champion their cause!
Redwood Middle School is a NYC public school in its second year of operation.
Currently, we serve students in 6th & 7th grade from a low-income part of Jamaica, Queens. With limited financial resources, my students struggle to come to class prepared with the supplies and tools they need to even begin the learning process.
My students this year include the incoming 6th graders with special needs - as their ELA teacher, I will be working with them to meet their specific needs and support them so that they can excel as readers and writers. Our goal is to ensure every scholar reads on grade level by the end of the year!
Basic classroom supplies are a financial burden for many of my students and their families, which is why I am working to champion their cause and provide them with what they need to succeed!
My Project
Basic supplies such as pencils, highlighters, pens, index cards, clipboards, colored pencils, post-it notes etc will enable my students to engage in the learning process - reading, writing, listening, speaking, & thinking their way towards a bright future.
We desperately need a media cart to house our classroom projector and computer. The projector is used on a daily basis and without a media cart, we often waste time setting it up on make-shift tables, trying to get the image "just right".
My reluctant reads will be more inclined to read when I tell them they can get comfy on our new reading rug!
As my school continues to grow, I would like access to a printer in my classroom so that I don't waste time running to and from the office to print documents for my students.
Lastly, we did include some motivational and inspirational items on our list of supplies to help keep students engaged and help remind them of all the reasons they are here - to learn, to grow, & to have fun!
Our Redwood Scholars have a new motto this year, again inspired by Rita Pierson:
'I am somebody.
I was somebody when I came. I’ll be a better somebody when I leave. I am powerful, and I am strong. I deserve the education that I get here.’
To this end, our scholars are full of potential and deserve the best education possible, yet financial burdens can be a barrier preventing them from reaching their full potential.
We need YOUR help providing them with supplies!
