Knowing the news is important in teaching young children about the world around them. The news is an excellent source of nonfiction information that students should have an awareness of.
I will be teaching approximately 60 kindergarten, first, and second graders for reading.
Many of the students will not be able to read at first. However, with the color illustrations of these magazines, my students will enjoy learning all about the current news.
My Project
I am requesting a class set of both the 1st grade Scholastic News magazines and the 2nd grade Scholastic News magazines. We will use these magazines weekly to gain exposure of nonfiction reading material. My students will work in groups to answer the questions and partner read the news articles. Students will also journal about what they have read.
Our school has implemented the Common Core State Standards.
The Common Core Standards have a lot of skills that need to be pulled from nonfiction reading materials. It is also important to integrate science and social studies topics with reading.
