Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach preschool to 16 three and four year old students with autism or severe developmental delays in a self-contained classroom with a low-student to teacher ratio in a low income/high poverty community of 22,000 students. One hundred percent of my students receive free breakfast/lunch and some receive supplemental food that they bring home. They face challenges in and out of the classroom. Many of my students are non-verbal or have emerging language skills. They arrive at school eager to learn and we celebrate all of their successes, no matter how small.
The everyday challenge is to engage and sustain attention to the simplest tasks, increasing their ability to communicate appropriately with adults and peers.
Their language skills are just beginning to develop, some are non-verbal learners or emerging language learners. All students have an IEP. In addition to their severe developmental delays, many of my students come from families where English is their second language.
My Project
Music therapists and autism researchers see a link between autism and the use of music as a therapeutic intervention. Tuned into Learning is an interactive music and multimedia program providing students with a motivating and effective way to practice essential social skills (e.g. turn taking, eye contact, peer awareness) as well as language skills (e.g. action words, "wh" questions, oral motor activities) and academic/readiness skills (e.g. pointing, counting, body parts).
By donating to this project, you will not only motivate my students to develop language and socialization skills but you will also help to increase my students' academic achievement.
Music can help individuals with autism make social connections through a mutual shared interest. Tuned into Learning uses slow methodic songs and vivid real-life photographs to give children with autism a way to organize information and help them learn simple tasks, such as expressing emotions, making eye contact and greeting each other. It is challenging to make learning basic social, academic and socialization skills interesting and fun, but this program captivates students interests and provides them a safe and fun way to learn.
The research is clear--- music is making a huge difference in terms of learning key social skills, as well as decreasing the deficits in language and school readiness. Help me reach these students and provide them with the key components to their academic success by donating to this project.
