Note-Booking in Science

My students need Science Lab notebooks for science investigations. We also need instruction and example books on note-booking. We want the fish dissection model for reference when we dissect an actual fish this spring.

My Students

The fifth grade students at our school are constantly working toward being stewards of our watershed, empowered decision makers, historians and conscientious community members. We are located in south central Montana, just north of Yellowstone National Park. We are an active, outdoorsy and environmentally aware class. Being engaged with our "backyard" keeps us connected to our watershed.

Our daily goal is to explore learning through personal experience and modeling.

The fifth graders of Livingston, Montana value the knowledge they acquire in this year of study, and some students reflect upon graduation that it was their favorite.

My Project

We want to try the grid paper ruled notebooks rather than lined sheets for ease of creating charts, tables and graphs to go with our investigations. These notebooks cost a bit more, but I think they are worth the investment for connecting math and science standards. In addition to the student notebooks we want example books showing scientist's note book entries throughout history. I need teacher resources to read to help me best implement science note-booking in the classroom.

They fish anatomy model is something my students asked for when I let them review the science supply catalog that came in the mail recently.

They are anticipating the fish dissection lab we are planning for the spring. They indicated that it will help them understand the anatomy of a fish and aid in their understanding during the lab. How could I say, "no" to this request?
