Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

It's a bird. It's a plane. No, believe it or not it's actually a science classroom! For eighty-seven eighth grade students, a social studies classroom lacking lab benches, running water and up-to-date technology is what they call their science class. I am an eighth-grade science teacher at a public school in a high-need community. I work with students in both general and special education in a population that includes English Language Learners (ELLs).

While I like to think I am a fun and engaging teacher with a fun and engaging voice, I understand the reality that eighth-grade students journeying through their adolescent years will at some point find it difficult to sit through an entire year of JUST my voice! I have been doing my best to supplement my science lessons with transparencies and hands-on materials, however my lessons are lacking the real-life examples and videos that illustrate so many science topics in our curriculum. Last week my students were learning about Mitosis and Cell Division. I drew some colorful pictures of chromosomes and cells, but I couldn't show them what it actually looks like when cells divide inside of our bodies.

Having an LCD projector in the classroom would add a whole new dimension of learning for my students. All lessons and labs could be supplemented with real-life science clips as I work to teach the students new 8th grade material as well as review and re-teach 6th and 7th grade material that they are responsible for knowing on the State Science Exam. A projector would additionally enable students to create and share presentations as part of a cooperative learning environment.

Please answer my students' call for "not another lecture!" With more visual aid in the classroom, my students will certainly have a better chance of understanding and mastering the New York standards and passing the New York State Science Exam. With your help, they will enjoy themselves too! Thank you for making a difference in my students' lives.
