North Carolina Coastal Experience

My students need to travel to the coast of North Carolina to build background knowledge so they will connect with and remember our social studies and science curriculum.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most students who live in our county in North Carolina take a trip to the North Carolina coast in fourth grade. I remember taking this same trip when I was in fourth grade! However, because our school has a high poverty rate, this trip has been out of reach for our students - until now!

My students are brilliant, bold, and amazingly resilient.

Our school is Title I (over 90% free and reduced lunch) with a high number of students whose parents do not speak English as their first language. While they have faced more challenges in their 10 years of life than many of us will ever face, I believe in their potential to succeed. My students come ready to achieve their goals. They have dreams of graduation and college. Unfortunately, many are falling behind in school because they lack background knowledge and real world connections to the concepts and vocabulary they are expected to know with the new Common Core Standards.

My Project

In fourth grade social studies, we focus on learning about North Carolina. We specifically learn about the regions of North Carolina and what makes each region unique. What better way to learn about the coastal plain than to actually travel there and see it for themselves! The chance to visit the coast and walk on a real battleship will make what we have studied in the classroom really come to life. In science, fourth graders study animal adaptations and changes to the earth's surface. Our stop at the aquarium will help them see the adaptations and habitats firsthand. Students will also walk on the beach and watch sand being washed away. They will see erosion and deposition in action, which is so much better than just reading about it in a textbook, or even doing an experiment. The concrete experiences will cement the vocabulary in their minds for life.

Out of all the students in our system, the students at our school would benefit from the schema and background knowledge this fourth grade rite of passage will give the most, because many of them have not had an opportunity like this in the past.

Without your help, this trip would not even be a possibility at our school. With your help, our students will have an amazing experience they will never forget.
