This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I recently accepted my first teaching position at an International Baccalaureate magnet school that welcomes students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. Approximately 2/3 of the students receive free and reduced lunch.
The beauty of this school is that each student's individual knowledge and personal experiences are welcomed and valued.
These students are naturally inquisitive, reflective, and exercise initiative in applying thinking skills critically and creatively. They understand and appreciate differing cultural and personal histories and are opened to various perspectives. They are caring, and approach unfamiliar situations with courage and independence.
I am beyond honored to begin my teaching career with these unique learners.
My Project
I have worked over the last year to build a classroom library on my own. While many students are able to enjoy reading books that are just right for them, some of my students cannot. These books will help me meet the needs of my lower readers.
While these students may be struggling readers, they have embraced the struggle and are prepared to work hard.
My goal is to provide more equitable access to literacy standards through the use of high quality books at their level. The purpose of selecting series books is to hook my readers on an author or a character and provide them multiple opportunities to engage with literature.
