Nonfiction: To California and Beyond!

My students need a diverse collection of nonfiction books to study California history and to use as mentor texts for writing nonfiction.

My Students

I am the lucky teacher of 25 vivacious and curious fourth graders. We represent almost all the countries on the globe. From China to Africa to the Philippines. We live in San Francisco, California, and have the privilege of living in a wonderfully diverse city that is truly represented in our classroom.

We love to read, write, play, dance, and sing.

We play sports, solve problems, and work hard to make the world we live in a better place. I am so proud of all of them.

My Project

Having a variety of books to read is always a good thing. But when it comes to fourth graders on varied reading levels, having a variety of books is an amazing thing. As fourth graders, we study California history and write about it as well.

Having a variety of nonfiction books can be used for research purposes as well as mentor texts to allow students to study different kinds of nonfiction writing!

When teaching nonfiction, not only are we teaching students about content, and in our classroom specifically about California, but it also gives students a wide variety of structures to model their own writing when they begin writing nonfiction.

These materials will make a huge difference in the lives of my students because they will be able to access the history of California through real literature. Being able to analyze not only the different structures of nonfiction text, but then to be able to turn around and use those structures to help them develop their own nonfiction books.
