My Project
My students who love sports can rattle off stats and facts of their favorites like it's nothing. Favorites teams and players can always get them interested-when we have our book fair the sports posters are always the first to go-and now we just need books that will get them reading! They know where to head if they want sports fiction-but some kids aren't interested in make-believe and our nonfiction section is outdated and small in comparison.
Adding biographies of sports stars they admire and strategy books to help them hone their skills will grab the interest of the school's athletic aficionados and make library time valuable for them.
When you give children what they want to read, whatever it is, they'll read. Their interests and the identities they build from them are still forming, but are vitally important to every student-they know who they are and what they like. When a space like a school library validates those interests by having a collection that supports them, you also validate the child, not just as a reader, but as a person. Your support would not just make a lot of my students happy, but help make our school library a place that supports and encourages every child!
