4th graders are fantastic learners. I am a first year teacher to a delightful group of fourth grade students in a school where at least 85% of the students live below the poverty level. Students come into our school with no experience reading and the schools resources are limited as well. This school is located in a town with no library within 30 minutes of it and no enrichment activities for the kids.
My 4th graders love learning but have to make do with very little materials. I teach in Kentucky where the students are asked to do writing portfolios in 4th grade. One of the pieces they had to do this year was a transactive piece where they teach a subject to someone else. However, they had no materials. Even our library is ill equipped with non-fiction texts. There is not a public library within 30 minutes of the town and many of our students do not have a car in the family. The lack of non-fiction materials also causes difficulty in teaching students to read and understand non-fiction books and information. In addition, there are no alternatives to teaching Science from the textbooks. If students cannot read or understand the textbook they are often left confused.
My students would benefit from the nonfiction reading set. They would have non-fiction books on a variety of subjects at several different reading levels so that all students could be successful at reading and writing non-fiction. These books could also be used to help level out the field in Science where some students cannot understand the textbooks.
So help my students be successful in reading, writing, and Science by equipping us with these great resources.
