Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My class is about to embark on a series of informational reading and writing units.

I work in an urban, high-poverty school in California.

My students are enrolled as fifth graders in a highly gifted magnet school. They are avid readers and my current selection of nonfiction books will not sustain them for the year. My students have given me a list of titles and topics they would like to learn more about this year.

My Project

When I asked my students what topics they would like to learn more about in their informational reading and writing units, they did not hesitate to give me an exhaustive list. We are currently studying early European explorers and Early American Colonies. Many of the books on the list are related to that topic. We are also preparing a Revolutionary War Unit in Social Studies. I did add one PBS documentary about the Revolutionary War so that I could also include digital texts into our curriculum. My students need a varied collection of more than 45 high-interest nonfiction books to support our informational reading and writing units.

These books will have a great impact on my students.

They will definitely make use of the resources as they are avid readers and enjoy learning about social studies in particular.
