Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I had been teaching remotely last year, and couldn't wait to get back into the classroom in the fall! Our students have been so resilient, patient, and hardworking throughout the pandemic; it's incredible what they have overcome!

Our 2nd grade classroom just outside Denver has an array of language backgrounds, socioeconomic backgrounds, and students who have returned this year from both in-person learning and remote learning during the 2020-21 school year!

Each student brings a different perspective, varying background knowledge, and experiences to share. Our classroom community thrives on respect and we take time each day to learn from one another.

My Project

We have an amazing start to our nonfiction classroom library. Kids are fascinated by the world around them, and the National Geographic Kids books do an amazing job of peaking student interest about a nonfiction subject, creating books at levels that students can access independently, and using nonfiction text features (table of contents, photographs, key words) to build student knowledge.

With this set of nonfiction books, my kids each year will have an amazing choice of topics to choose from for research.

It's so important for students to take ownership of their own learning, and by allowing choice and respecting student interest, we'll see the greatest outcomes!
