Nonfiction Can Change A World Outlook

My students need non-fiction that allow them to visualize the world from a new perspective.

My Students

I know that the majority of my students live near or at the poverty level. I have taught within the community since I was in high-school. Whether I was at a local low income housing apartment complex in the district or in a school building, I have heard the heart-wrenching family lives that is the reality for many of my students. Some of my students grow-up with absent parents, hungry bellies, and scarce resources. Yet, I know that I teach in an economically, as long as a culturally, diverse community.

I know that my classroom environment that I create needs to supersede all the environments that my students are left to navigate everyday.

I strive to create such a positive environment that students can excel without worrying about all the other distractions. One of my students is a refugee from Syria who understands the language, but is too afraid to speak up during class. She fled Syria because of religious persecution. I modified the tenth grade reading for her while maintaining the expected course outcomes, as her reading level is low.

I am honored to teach all these students and I am honored that you are interested in helping me.

My Project

I will use these non-fiction books as gateways for entry into the rigorous expected course outcomes of 11th grade English. These students are the students that did not think they are ready for Advanced Placement English, for numerous reasons. I know that they are able to be successful but need the every extra resource and push they can get to boost their skill-set and confidence to get there. Your donation can help to make that a reality. I am requesting nonfiction that is high-interest and highly recommended to help my students analysis during lesson time.

A tremendous amount of responsibility is on the eleventh grader that they are expected to juggle socially and academically and he/she knows that the eleventh grade year matters a great deal for the future.

I know that there is a correlation between a student that is a reluctant readers and after school involvement and that he/she can be disconnected with school both academically and socially. By requesting books such as "In These Girls, Hope is a Muscle," and "Be a Changemaker: How to Start Something that Matters," I want to inspire all students to reach for the stars and begin to establish that foundation for his/her future.

Silent Sustained Reading (SSR) is best practice that can have a great impact on students and both myself and the school I teach in, value SSR reading. Last school year, the English department committed to one hour of SSR reading a week in the English classroom.

At this foundation point in the eleventh graders life, in a time when the SAT is taken and high-school transcripts are sent out, a donation of non-fiction books can offer a great support.
