Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are fifth-graders in an urban school. They represent diverse nationalities, home languages, family structures, interests, and learning styles.

My students are determined to overcome any obstacles they face in life.

The school neighborhood is in an area of high poverty, and more than 80% of the students in the community entered school with a primary language background other than English. However, my students will not let their circumstances label them as disadvantaged learners. They continue to make the best of the opportunities they are presented. As a result, they will finish their elementary school career with determination and resilience!

My Project

These materials will give my students access to high interest, nonfiction books that support our thematic studies of spies and space. In addition, these nonfiction resources will provide a base of information from which my students can continue to develop their knowledge about various components of space and spy science.

As a teacher, the biggest challenge in facilitating reading growth in my students comes from a lack of interest in the reading materials we provide.

My students have become voracious readers of all things space and spy related this year. My initial focus has been to provide as many fictional novels with these themes as possible. I would now like to expand our library to include a variety of nonfiction texts that will support my students' reading development in informational text as well.
