Non-Starving Artists

My Project

“Do you have a snack?” If I had a quarter for every time I was asked that every day, I would have plenty of money for snacks for all of my students. I teach art and I love teaching art but to do that successfully and connect with my students, I need them to be present both physically and mentally. And in order for them to be completely present, they need to be fed. I teach teens, who are constantly hungry, due to the fact that a) they’re teens and b) sometimes they just don’t have food available to them. By providing something for them to eat, no matter how small, makes a big difference in their morning when they miss breakfast or it’s not available for them and in the afternoon when lunch is far behind and there’s still 2 hours of school left. Food is also a comforting and caring gesture that seems to mean even more in there post-distance learning times.

As much food as they consume, they are voracious artists, consuming pencils, sharpies, and other basic art supplies at an exponential rate.

In our studio, every student receives an equal and equitable arts education with access to a variety of supplies to explore and grow their creativity. Our studio classroom is a welcoming and safe space for all students, and to be able to eat and make art in community is one of the greatest joys I can think of, and one of the things I missed the most during the distance learning years.
