Non-Prose, Verse, and Mystery Novels for Struggling Readers
Help me give my students more access to non-prose and free verse books that can spark their love of reading. Many students don't realize they like to read because they do not have the material to choose from.

My Project
I have realized in my school district that most of our students are reading at a lower reading level than their actual grade level. This is because they do not have access to enough updated reading material that is interesting, culturally appropriate, and engaging for them. I have compiled a list of books that are specifically geared toward young adult readers who struggle to comprehend what they are reading or simply to become engaged in a book.
My hope with this project is to add more age-appropriate and reading-level-appropriate novels to my classroom library that will allow my struggling and reluctant readers a better chance to spark their love for reading.
Many of the verse novels I have selected will allow students who struggle to even open a book the chance to read something both engaging and better suited to their reading comprehension levels. Books written in verse are essentially poetry books that tell a story, but there are no paragraphs and instead lines of poetry. I have found that this format of novel is less intimidating to students who do not like to read and makes them more willing to give reading a real and honest try.
Additionally, the few mystery novels I have added are suspense-filled YA books that hold student attention and draw students in right away. I hope that having more access to these novels will allow my students to dive into a world different from their own and to appreciate the treasure books are to the world. Kids who love to read are also kids who have improved reading levels, comprehension skills, better study habits, and are generally happier kids.
