I am a library media specialist in a middle school of about four hundred students. We are a high-poverty community where it can be tough to get kids engaged at school. How can you focus on learning when it seems like everything is stacked against you? The number one thing my students need is to feel connected and supported at school.
With just a little spark of inspiration, my students transform from struggling teenagers into creative, intelligent, engaged learners.
The things my kids love most about the library are the personal attention they get when they drop by, and the variety of activities available to them to get them engaged. They have big dreams and the library is a place they can dream them!
My Project
Nonfiction books cover a wide variety of topics, but tend to get "dated" pretty quickly, so they constantly need replacement. (Imagine a book on robotics from just five or ten years ago - it would look pretty ridiculous today!) Students want to learn about the world, and they need the information to be accurate and up-to-date.
Kids love nonfiction if we give them the right books.
They love books with lots of pictures, catchy covers, and manageable bites of fascinating information. My lowest-level readers are voracious devourers of nonfiction books, and I need help keeping up! With student input, we have created a list of updated nonfiction books we'd love to have beyond our usual library budget.
