My students are a fun group of creative and active fifth graders. We live in a rural, isolated village in northwest Alaska, where many students practice subsistence hunting and fishing to support their families. Most of my students are Native Alaskan and are taught traditional native values.
My students love playing sports, hunting caribou, riding snow machines and four-wheelers, going ice fishing, and sledding.
My students are a diverse group, with strong ties to their families, their culture, and the land. In the classroom, they are an energetic group that enjoys working in groups, doing hands-on activities, and playing goofy games.
My Project
The books in our classroom library are there for students to read in school or at home. They use them to read independently, or as read alouds with their families. They just love finding new books that interest them. Our library is small but growing, and these titles will help me to add even more interesting books to our collection. When I asked my students which books I should add to our collection, many of them requested more nonfiction books.
I chose nonfiction books on topics that I know will interest the children.
Some of the titles have been requested by the students. The dinosaur books are for my students that just love dinosaurs. The record books are for my students that love to check out my current record books, but they are many years old. These weird and fun facts will engage all of my readers, and keep them learning. Help bring these fun titles to my fifth graders!
