Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are the Patriots! Our elementary school has been around for many years. The population of the school is about 835 students and a good percentage of that population is considered low income. The school library is the only place made available to the students where they can borrow a book to read. Most of these students have never been to a library outside of school and this is the only place where books are available to them. All students come to the library each day ready to choose an interesting book in standard condition. Each child that comes to the library is eager to find newer novels and picture books that are not ruined, old, or falling apart. As the new librarian, I would like to very much replace older outdated books with new and interesting materials. This school is truly a family friendly community. I am very grateful to be in such a wonderful and loving environment.

My Project

With more non-fiction books in the library, the students will have access to more informational reading. The students look forward to these titles in the library because they are easy to read and easy to understand. Unfortunately, we have few titles to offer in the library of this particular series. The "Who Was" or "Quien Fue" titles are about historical figures and events. With the addition of Spanish "Quien Fue" titles, this creates bi-literacy for the students that are enrolled in the Dual Language Immersion Program here at the school. Having these books in the library is a great investment.
