This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a diverse group of learners. Our class is a true class family. We have come together to support each other in all that we do. We are caring and compassionate and love to learn.
We especially love reading and books.
We service low income students. Almost 50% are English Language Learners from all different countries. We have many refugees in our school and other students with challenging backgrounds. Our students are hard workers and dedicated to learning. We are a close nit family of teachers and learners.
My Project
It is difficult to find lower leveled non-fiction books. New research suggests that 50% of books that students read should be non-fiction, and that is difficult at the lower levels because authors have just now started publishing nonfiction at lower levels. Therefore, many students are not receiving practice with non-fiction at lower reading levels. These will help bridge that gap.
Students will be able to read non-fiction books to practice good reading skills.
Because they are learning to read english, it is vital that they have appropriately leveled books. In addition, non-fiction books are many times easier for English Learners to understand because ideas transfer across the language barrier through pictures and known concepts.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
