My students need a large number of nonfiction books at varying reading levels, included in these 10 collections, to support the Common Core State Standards.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Florida is implementing the Common Core State Standards which is heavily focused on informational texts. Our classroom library is lacking in nonfiction books to help my students apply reading strategies that will be taught and refined in 2nd grade.
Our school is a Title 1 school in Florida.
The students in my class have a wide range of ability levels and the selection of nonfiction books does not meet their current needs. There are more books that are suited for higher reading levels, which are not useful to a majority the the students, especially at the beginning and middle of the school year. My students love to read, especially for information. They will go back and reread the same books just to see what else they can learn.
My Project
By having a large number of appropriately leveled nonfiction books in the classroom, the students will be able to apply and refine reading strategies that they learn this year. The Common Core State Standards heavily emphasize reading for information and being able to respond critically to what they read. My students will have more options readily available, that are appropriate for their reading abilities. I will also be able to teach more effectively having materials readily available that fit my class's needs and interests.
My students deserve to have access to quality reading materials that meet their needs, as well as their interests.
By having a large selection of nonfiction trade books in our classroom I will be able to better meet their needs and have appropriate materials on hand to help students learn and refine their critical thinking and reading skills.
