Non-Fiction Addiction - We Need Books!

My students need a plethora of non-fiction books, included in these 9 collections, to help support literacy in my classroom.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like to read a new book? After 14 years of teaching, my books have been loved to death. It's time for an update. These beautiful non-fiction books are high interest and will help my students increase their vocabulary.

My students are curious children who attend an International Baccalaureate school in an urban community.

They come from different cultures and socio-economic backgrounds. Our goal is to educate students who will understand what it's like to be global citizens. In order to do this, they need to be exposed to various types of literature and opportunities to ask questions and work in collaborative groups. My students read at various levels so it is important to provide them with multiple choices in my class library.

My Project

These leveled non-fiction books will not only enhance our guided reading time, they will also give my students an opportunity to select books during independent reading. My students will also be able to read with a partner who might read at a different level. When students collaborate with one another they are able to think at a deeper level. The different comprehension skills that are incorporated with the leveled books will help improve their understanding of what they read. After analyzing my students' data I will be able to tailor the skill to their individual needs. That way they will have a purpose for what they read during independent reading time. I will also use some of the higher level books for read alouds. During the read alouds we can focus on questioning.

The funding of this project will not only benefit my students this year but for many years to come.

These books will make a huge impact on my students. When they enter my classroom they will be so excited to get their hands on these new books. I know they'll want to read them all day. I can't wait to use them as a teaching tool to help improve their reading comprehension skills and encourage their love of reading.
