This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

We have around 40 special education students at our middle school. Many of these students have auditory processing, attention, or executive functioning disorders that make good headphones vital for participating in their general education classes, listening to audiobooks (especially for struggling readers), or engaging with class assessments and school-wide testing (including I-ready, ELPAC, and CASSPP). The headphones our students currently rely on are a mixture of different types and qualities of headphones, some of which are starting to crumble or malfunction, and which often cause feelings of inequity for students who get stuck with the "bad pairs".

We want to give all of our students consistent access to high-quality headphones that will ensure any learning and assessment we do is completely accurate and fully meeting the individualized needs of our special education students.

The quality of these headphones will also ensure that these needs will be met not only for our current group of wonderful students, but also for future cohorts of special education students at Para Los Ninos Middle School.

Their noise-cancelling feature will also help our students with higher sensory or attention needs to better focus while engaged with their computer-based work or during online assessments. Even for students without formal needs in these domains, they will be helpful for ensuring that students remain on task, which can often be a struggle for our middle schoolers.

Finally, higher quality-headphones will enable us to engage in more specific, targeted, high-quality instruction in key listening domains such as phonics, phonological awareness, and listening comprehension. These areas are far harder to support and target with whole-class audio presentations or poor quality individual headphones.
