My Students

Have you ever started a book and then you couldn't put it down? Have you ever had your teacher tell you that you had to because your fifteen minutes of small-group instruction was done?

My kids come from Southeast DC.

To give you an idea of where we're at, I just learned the other day that the radar device on top of the school is meant to detect neighborhood gunshots so that the police can respond immediately. (I didn't even know that technology existed.) They are amazing students but literacy is not necessarily stressed in every home and we need to get them to enjoy reading at an early age.

My Project

The big push in our district right now is for Guided Small Group Reading. I take 3-5 kids in a group and we read a text on their ability level. It works great, but the texts we have are either printouts from a website OR texts I borrow from our school library that I can't let my kids keep in their individual book bins to read at another time. I'm asking for D and E leveled readers that I can let them keep in their bins for a longer period. To give you some idea, D and E levels are generally associated with the beginning of first grade - I teach 2nd. The kids I have reading at this level need to see these books for more than the 15-20 minutes I can give them. I let them keep the internet printouts, of course, but real books are just more interesting to look at!

The idea of Guided Reading is that the reader is NOT frustrated.

The books are at that child's ability level so that they can begin to enjoy reading and build their reading strategies no matter how high or low they're starting. Some of mine are already a year behind and these books would let them experience the joy of reading (rather than the frustration!)
