My Students

This is an extremely unique school year. My first-grade students have never experienced a normal school year, and this year will not be normal either. Due to Covid 19, most of these children were not able to attend a preschool or Head Start program. Some of my students don't recognize letters and numbers. This is critical background knowledge for first-grade students and we have some catching up to do!

More than half of my students are living in low-income households, and the same percentage are first-generation United States citizens.

They have watched how hard their parents work to provide them with a safe, comfortable home in a country that values freedom and imagination. As incredible as their young imaginations may be, sometimes hands-on materials and supplies are just as important as their minds for success in school.

My Project

For years, my students have used both paper and pencil and even more so, dry erase markers and whiteboards. I can't even begin to tell you how many markers we go through in a year. I feel it is such a waste and it's time to make certain our future adults learn the importance of the stewardship of our resources. This year, in particular, I am amazed by the fact some children do not understand that we need to conserve - to not just use, and then use some more. These LCD writing boards require no paper, pencil, whiteboard, or marker! What a concept and opportunity for learning!

I am hopeful that by replacing what we now use, we can begin to come to a real understanding of the value of reducing our waste and doing everything we can to make our futures brighter!

We use dry erase boards every day for our math moments, explorations, and literacy skill-building. These boards will mean so much in the scope of broadening my students' understanding of conservation.
