My students need 37 books to help solve the bullying epidemic that exists in our school.

My Students
My students have a two-fold plan to decrease bullying in our school: first, educate students on the issue of bullying, and, second, make school more engaging for students so that they'll be less inclined to participate in or put up with bullying. How will they do this? With books, of course!
My students are suburban-rural Michigan teenagers, and they have recently complained of an increase in bullying.
The kinds of bullying that happen in our school are hard to catch because what may look like a friendly conversation from afar can actually be a brutal exchange of words. Also, since most of my students have spent their whole lives in our small town, they are accustomed to viewing people who are "different" with disdain.
My Project
During in-class discussions, my students have expressed that books are powerful and that they may have the power to lower the amount of bullying at our school. They believe that books can take two things away from bullies and people who stand by and allow bullying. First, my students believe that books on bullying or involving bullying situations will take away the rampant ignorance that makes bullying acceptable. Furthermore, they also believe that many bullies are motivated by a lack of confidence in academic matters, so they have expressed a desire to see more books of a variety of genres to help bullies find greater engagement in school. These books will be located in my classroom library, a resource that is used by many students both within and outside of my classroom. My students need 37 books to help solve the bullying epidemic that exists in our school.
If it weren't for Townsend Press and ABC Family and their generous offer to fund this project, it's likely that my students' ideas about bullying would have remained simply ideas.
Now, with the help of Townsend and ABC Family, my students will be able to see the true impact of books on a real problem in our school.
