My Students

Have you ever tried to read a popular children's picture book to a bunch of preschoolers and everyone wants to see the pictures at the same time? Better yet, everyone wants to hear the book at the same time also.

I work in a high risk; high needs school in an urban city in Virginia.

The preschoolers in our school program are delayed in speech and/or literacy skills that are needed to succeed in school. Despite these issues, they are trying to reach their highest potentials. In today’s society, my students need to learn to enjoy reading and learn many pre-literacy skills before they enter kindergarten.

My Project

Ezra Jack Keats has created many classic, award winning, picture books that have been read to children since the early 1960’s. The books are multicultural, short and contain colorful illustrations. The books are now created in “big book size” which means that the teacher can share and enjoy a book with her whole class at one time. Everyone can see the pictures and print in the book at circle time. Believe me, this is a big deal for a primary teacher to be able to read and reread a favorite book to the whole class at the same time. Why else are big books important you ask? Big Books allow the teacher to model reading behaviors (such as reading from left to right, stopping at periods, etc.). Big Books also allow teachers to draw attention to the drawings and the larger printed words and letters. Many of the children comment about the story and it helps the other children to hear the conversation while looking at the pictures.

Ezra Jack Keats wrote books that my children can identify with.

Many of the parents of my children have read these timeless classics when they were young. I would like to honor the children's request to reread their favorite books. The Keat's big books would allow me to reread these favorite books to the whole class at one time instead of several times a day to small groups. Thus we will have time to introduce other books during small group time.
