Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My fifth grade guitar students love the guitar with a real passion, and it shows on the instruments! Their enthusiasm and constant playing leads to strings breaking and children being forced to share guitars with one another due to a lack of supplies.
My students attend a K-8th grade public school in a high poverty community in New Jersey.
Our school does not have a budget for musical materials. Thanks to the generosity of the organization Little Kids Rock, we received 30 classical Fender guitars that I use with all of my fifth grade classes each year. These kids LOVE to play the guitar and choose to do so in addition to music class during lunch and after school as often as they can.
My Project
Since these guitars are played by so many students so often, they endure quite a bit of wear and tear. Strings break frequently and because of this, some guitars sit unused for months before we have funds to replace the strings. This often means that instead of each student having access to an individual guitar every music class some students have to share a guitar as partners, therefore limiting their actual playing time to 50%.
If we received these 25 sets of strings, all 30 of our guitars would be available for the children and we would have a number of extra strings for future breakage. It would mean every student would get to participate during every minute of music class.
Donations to this project will allow more students to have more hands-on exposure to music.
Many of my students only have access to instruments through our music program and this would mean they would have a substantial increase in actual playing time. I believe that developing a love of music in elementary school can impact a child's development for life and these strings would lead to a greater access of guitar for so many children.
