Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine living in a neighborhood in which your local library was closed and you were going to a school that has no school library. This is what the students in my neighborhood face. We have zero funding for a school librarian and for newer classroom literature. I want this to change for my kids.

My school is part of Philadelphia School District.

We are located in one of the poorest sections of the city. Our school is a Title 1 school. Title one means that a large majority of our population is living at or below the poverty level. The parents of these students struggle daily to make ends meet, to put food on the table and clothe their children. With the local library closed, my students have no local establishment to borrow and read books. Our parents cannot afford to buy their children new books for their home. With the extreme budget cuts to the Philadelphia School District's budget, our school library has been closed because our librarian was laid off. Our school budget does not allow my principal to provide our rooms with quality literature for our class library. It is a vicious cycle that my students are paying the ultimate price. We need help.

My Project

With this project, I will be able to provide my students with a classroom library that is new and updated. As a young teacher with two children of my own, I have yet to develop my own quality class library. These books will give my classroom library a huge boost. It will give my students the chance to be exposed to new and exciting literature. I want my students to be excited to read and to get excited to have stories read to them. Our shares reading and partner reading will be elevated to new levels. My kids need a chance to be exposed to updated materials and this project being completely would do that for us.

This funding will give my kids access to quality literature that they need to become life long readers.

I want them to have the same opportunity to access books that some wealthier school districts get to see. Unfortunately, we do not have the money or budget to do so. This project would establish in my students the excitement and drive to be readers. With no neighborhood and school library, we are being set up to fail. My students need your help. Please consider donating.
