My Students

While we eagerly anticipate meeting our students for the 2020-2021 school year, we take time to reflect on the students who have already come through our kindergarten classrooms. These students are creative, loving, energetic, and eager to learn. Many come from economically disadvantaged households, but bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to our rooms.

The vast majority of our students speak Spanish at home and are navigating the challenges and opportunities of being children of immigrants in a new country.

They bring to us a wealth of knowledge about customs and traditions in their home countries. We've eaten homemade tamales, experienced the thrill of Oaxacan dance, and confused Mexican Mother's Day with American Mother's Day more times than we'd care to admit. Our students have shown us that kids are kids in all areas of the world, and Legos, Barbies, and blocks are always appropriate ice breakers. While paint makes marks on paper, these children have made marks on our heart.

My Project

Personal space has been a teaching topic in kindergarten for many years, even before COVID-19. Children learn to be aware of their bodies in relation to their surroundings. We talk about picking "smart spots" on the carpet and in the room so everyone can remain respectful, responsible, and safe. This year, due to COVID-19 regulations, we no longer have rugs or comfy chairs in our classrooms. This means our daily morning meetings take place at our tables, divided by clear plexiglass. Kids can no longer get cozy on the carpet to listen to a story. Any math or learning games must now take place on the cold tile floor. Children must learn about "smart spots" without the normal visual aids and experiences we would usually use. BUT- that's where we could use your help.

Sit spots will help children choose safely distanced spots on the floor to learn, work, and play.

These durable cushions can be easily cleaned and sanitized, and they allow students some autonomy and choice within their school day. We plan to assign cushions to individual students and teach them how to select smart and safe spots in the room. This way, students who prefer to work away from their table spots may do so, and those who choose to stay at their tables have more room. These sit spots also allow for some socially distanced group activities and class meetings.

We are so grateful for the opportunity to share these needs with you. The fact that you are browsing this site right now shows the same goodness in your heart that we see in our students. We know our students will repay the favor when they come across opportunities to help and serve.
