No Need to Turn Down for What with New Headphones!

My students need new headphones to use with their Chromebooks.

My Students

My students love using technology to learn new things in math, reading, and science...but it can be pretty hard to learn (and very noisy) while everyone is using a computer, and no one has their own set of headphones.

Having technology available to my students at school is a very exciting thing for them.

Many of my students come from homes without computers or Internet access, so they love to make use of the technology that awaits them at school. My students are exuberant learners, who come to school with a smile, despite the tough home situations that many of them come from. Most of my 3rd graders walk to school each day, in a neighborhood that has had more murders than any other neighborhood in our great city of Chicago. Despite the challenges they face, my students persevere and all have goals to attend college. They are children who crave knowledge and positive relationships, and they are active learners who like to experience learning first-hand.

My Project

Last year, our school was able to use limited school funds to purchase a Chrome Cart with about 30 Chromebooks for all 3 of the third grade classes to share. Unfortunately, there was not enough funding to cover the cost of headphones, so I was left to purchase cheap headphones from the dollar store with my own money. All too often, students were coming up to me saying, "Ms. S, these headphones are broken!"...and I would have to throw them away. My students will be able to use these new headphones and never have to worry about them breaking, or falling apart within days of buying them. They can each work on a task that is specifically designed for their needs on the computer, without disrupting other students. They can engage in videos, games, and other activities to learn science, math, and reading skills. In addition, these headphones can be used with several of my students with special needs to cancel out noise during quiet work time.

By having these headphones in our classroom, my students will each be able to use computers to learn, without having the distraction of hearing the volume from everyone else's computers.

I can have some students working on computers quietly, while I meet with small groups...which allows us to get more teaching and learning accomplished by eliminating the sounds from the students' activities on the computers. They also will provide a much needed quiet escape for students with special needs.
