Can you imagine trying to sit in a classroom not being able to concentrate because you are not sure that your mom is well or you are not sure that your parents will fight when you get home? How would you feel?
My students served by this project are kinder through 5th graders who have concerns that are distracting them at school, forcing them to worry all day.
Because of the current economic status in Nevada, suicide rates are up, parental disputes are more common, and loss of housing is an everyday experience. The effects on the children with these concerns can range from poor appetite, lack of concentration, and acting out.
My Project
Allowing students who have been referred to their counselor to have a tangible item to hold and collect their worries may improve their performance at school. No More Worries would be a specific group that teaches students about how to deal with those concerns and allow them to make a Worry Doll. A Worry Doll originated in Guatemala. It is put under the student's pillow at night to collect all those worries that build up throughout the day.
Can we make a child's life perfect?
Can we take away everything that creates worry and stress? Unfortunately the answer is no, but we can give them outlets and positive ways to cope with life's stresses.
