I teach third grade in a Title 1 school, where there is a large population of needy students. In my classroom of 21, I have basic skills, ESL, G&T, and regular education students. No matter what type of learner they are, though, they all love to read!
Just like adults, children are not interested in reading books that seem boring. Science and Social Studies text books are unappealing to my students, and we would much rather learn through chapter books! I teach most of my content areas through literature circles, where students can learn through historical fiction and non-fiction texts. In the past, I have purchased many books with my own money. Unfortunately, they are all falling apart due to their age. My students are left to tape in pages, or looking on with a friend when they get to a page they do not have.
Due to a tight budget, it is hard to get the replacement books we need -- but you can help! With these new titles, my students will be able to take a trip to the past! They can learn about what life was like as a pilgrim, or as a passenger on the Titanic! They can take a voyage through the Rainforest to see the animal life there. Or, they can go to the listening center to listen to many different titles of the Magic Tree House series! You can help to bring literature, Science, and History to life for my students.
