We need high interest books, as defined by the students themselves. This includes graphic novels, horror books, mysteries and realistic fiction.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
About My Students
This request is being submitted by the elected class representatives making up the I.S. 143 Student Council. These leaders saw fit to use their position to infuse each English class with high interest books as defined by their peers.
As one may imagine, the Student Council has students who are known for being vocal. This project, however, served as a chance for these big personalities to focus their passions on a particular goal. They experienced the challenges of rallying a large group (their official class) around this project goal. It appears that this project has helped these students see that any goal worth pursuing involves moments of frustration that must be overcome. Hopefully, their work will result in the acquisition of some appealing books that will enhance the classroom environment and their peers' overall school experience.
In sum, students on the council will learn the value of teamwork in accomplishing a goal, and their constituents will learn the power of voicing their preferences and opinions. Middle school students have a strong sense of fairness and a desire to pitch in and help. Sometimes we don't give them enough opportunities to do so. This project helps them tackle a big problem - turning kids onto an old fashioned non-digital medium in world in which they're surrounded by glowing screens. Provided they really listen and take note of what their peers request, they have the chance to change their classes' perspective on books and reading.
In Their Own Words
One goal we are trying to accomplish is to get books that the students will be more interested in. Another goal is to get books students can connect with. According to the survey we gave out, many of the kids at our school don't like to read in their free time. We hope to change their minds with this project.
Well, we can always go online and buy books like on any website that has a good price for our favorite books. Also, we will ask our class what kinds of books they want to read. We will order those kinds of books. Maybe at the end of the year, more kids in our school will say that they like reading. We hope that our project will show kids that reading can be fun if the books aren't boring.
More kids will be able to read the books they want. More kids will be interested in reading. Reading will be better/fun. Kids only want to do Snapchat or text on their phones. They don't concentrate on anything very long. If we could find books that they got really interested in, maybe they could learn to concentrate longer. That would be good for when they took tests, too. Better test grades might help them get into a better high school and college and have a better job. Better books could lead to a better life!
